The National Christmas Tree is lit in a special ceremony in early December. In 2012 the event featured Neil Patrick Harris, Jason Mraz, James Taylor, Colbie Caillat and more. Tickets to see the lighting ceremony live are given away via an online lottery. The event began in 1987 as a way to celebrate the 60th birthday of the king and has been held during the first week of December ever since. Newport Beach, California Boat Festival

From cruise ships to yachts, these boats don’t race but cruise Newport Harbor decked in their holiday finest. The city shows its holiday spirit at the annual Newport Beach Christmas Boat Parade that occurs mid-December and lasts five nights. The event has a 100-year history and is viewed by more than 1 million people annually. In addition the entire Newport Harbor puts on a show with homes, docks and whole landscapes decorated to make the experience even more special.
